Oakham School

Oakham is a boarding and day school for girls and boys aged 10-18. One of the UK’s leading IB Schools, Oakham students achieve consistently high results. Our strength lies in challenging every individual to exceed his or her expectations through encouragement, pastoral support and a diversity of opportunity. Our Learning Habits at Oakham initiative develops lifelong learning skills and underpins all our teaching. Every pupil is valued and motivated to work hard. Sport, music, drama and the arts flourish. Our extensive activities’ programme includes voluntary action both locally and overseas. Oakhamians are warm and approachable but confident and determined young people. It is a very exciting place to be.

Academic resources are outstanding; facilities include the new Mehra Faculty of Science, the Jerwood School of Design Technology, the Richard Bull art and design centre, the Smallbone Library (one of the finest of its kind in the country), a theatre and a music school.

The House system is central to daily life, and with close and supportive guidance, every pupil is valued and motivated. It says much for the school community that pupils regard their House as ‘home’ and their Housemaster or Housemistress as head of their school ‘family’. A personal tutor supports each student and small tutorial groups meet regularly. Communication between home and school is actively encouraged. Sport and Activities: Oakham has a strong sporting tradition and has extensive, superbly maintained fields, floodlit all-weather pitches and a sports complex that includes an indoor swimming pool, squash and fives courts and a fitness centre. We offer around 30 sports including rugby, soccer, hockey, cricket, athletics, swimming, shooting, tennis, squash, fives, badminton, basketball, netball, fencing, lacrosse, golf and sailing. In addition to the Duke of Edinburgh’s award, volunteering and a thriving Combined Cadet Force, a weekly activities programme encourages pupils to try something new or pursue favourite sports or pastimes.
Music and drama play are integral to school life and Oakham has an established performing arts reputation. There are opportunities to develop creative expression and imagination and each season’s productions and performances are richly diverse. Music students can perform individually or in orchestras, bands, choirs and ensembles. Follow the ‘videos’ link on our web homepage to explore our music and creative arts further.
