IB Training and Support information

Supporting the Leaders in IB World Schools

Dear Head,
As part of its commitment to supporting the ongoing development of school leaders, the International Baccalaureate is introducing a number of new workshops aimed at providing high quality programmes to IB World School leaders in the Africa, Europe, Middle East  region.
The workshops are intended to develop the leadership capacities in a school and are therefore relevant for Heads, Deputy Heads or Heads of Department but will also be invaluable for you to prepare the future leaders in your school.
The Leadership Programmes are offered by Urban Leadership Centre (http://www.urbanleadershipcentre.com) in co-operation with the International Baccalaureate.
Three new programmes will be offered this year:
1. Development Centre
2. 360 Survey
3. 360 Team Survey
I hope that you find this new offering of interest for your school and I would appreciate any feedback you wish to give to me.
Best wishes
Adrian Kearney
Regional Director, Africa, Europe, Middle East

WHAT IS THE DEVELOPMENT CENTRE?
Who is it for?
The Development Centre has been designed for headteachers, deputies, and other leaders in school who wish to go through an assessment process to identify strengths and areas for development as the basis for improving future performance.
What is it?
In 2011, The Development Centre training is being held in  The Hague  and   Oxford  .
These are 1 day events where candidates undertake a series of exercises which are mapped to the twelve competencies which comprise The School Leadership Model. The competencies were arrived at by interviewing the headteachers of some of the best performing schools in   England
Although initially developed in England, the materials used in the Centre have been adapted to reflect the IB’s principles and philosophy.
The exercises at the Centre are as follows:
Exercise 1: Behavioural Event Interview
Candidates are interviewed about their daily practice and how they respond to challenging situations
Exercise 2: Case Study of a real school
Candidates will be invited to evaluate a range of data, e.g. a report relevant to the context of their school and prepare an action plan to be presented to the school’s board
Exercise 3: Lesson observation
Candidates view a lesson in a school. They then report back to a member of staff (assessor in role) on strengths and areas for development
Exercise 4: Group Exercise
What will you get?
Candidates will receive a bespoke profile setting out their strengths and development needs. As Sir William Atkinson states:
"Attending the Development Centre was the best professional development I have received as a headteacher. It was challenging and conducted by people who know their stuff. The profile I received was extremely valuable and certainly reflects how I see myself both as a leader and professional. I would recommend visiting the Development Centre to all school leaders."
Sir William Atkinson, Executive Headteacher, Phoenix High School West London(Adviser to the government)
After the candidate has received the profile, the assessor that worked with them at the Centre will ring them to provide additional feedback and coaching.
Who will carry out the assessments?
All our assessors have been successful school leaders who have been trained to carry out assessments. They can ‘walk the talk’ and provide you with insightful and knowledgeable feedback based on experience. In addition, they have been trained by the IB to develop their knowledge and understanding of the key principles of the IB.
"The Development Centre is excellent and is underpinned by an excellent, comprehensive and detailed framework. As well as being very good for developing established heads, it will be invaluable in assisting with the identification of future leaders."
Sir Michael Wilshaw, Principal, Mossbourne Academy, Hackney
In addition to the feedback and coaching session which comes as part of the initial price, candidates can opt to book additional coaching sessions at approximately 2 monthly intervals.
*All profiles are entirely confidential to the assessors and the candidate.

360 SURVEY
A 360 survey provides detailed feedback to highlight strengths and areas for development or consolidation by seeking feedback from line managers, direct reports, peers and colleagues.
The questions are underpinned by the competencies set out in The School Leadership Model. Our approach is to use rating scale questions as well as open questions. The outcome is a combination of different people’s perceptions which have been aggregated and compared, with rich and valuable insights provided by the comment questions. We focus on strengths – the Spike – as well as areas for development. This approach can provide participants with confidence and belief.
Katie Rooney, Wallasey Schools head of visual and performing arts, said ‘discovering her spike had given her extra confidence.’
"It is an ideal tool for individuals, teams or organisations reviewing existing behaviours, organisational climate or evaluating the effectiveness of interventions, although the technology can be used for most survey requirements. This approach is far more personalised than other systems. There was initially some scepticism from staff, but the feedback has been extremely positive."
Phil Duffy, Headteacher, Wallasey School, Wirral

Again, the 360 survey is applicable to all school leaders at whatever stage of their career. Feedback is provided by one of our consultants – all previously successful school leaders – via the phone. Consultants then work with participants to draw up a bespoke and focused action plan.
Our reports are processed by YSC, a global company of business psychologists, and leaders in their field. They use cutting edge technology to analyse data and produce reports.
Their clients include: Tesco, Barclays, Sainsbury’s, BUPA Hospitals, JP Morgan Chase, Cadbury Schweppes and many others.
In addition to the feedback and coaching session which comes as part of the initial price, candidates can opt to book additional coaching sessions at approximately 2 monthly intervals.

360 TEAM SURVEY
Very similar to the 360 survey but our consultants work with the school prior to the survey to identify areas that the team – senior leadership team or any group that operates in the school – might wish to explore
Members of the team and non team members then complete a questionnaire enabling the team to explore how the team is perceived by the team and a range of stakeholders.
This is an extremely powerful tool for improving performance.

Most schools opt for individual surveys for the team and a team survey to meet both the needs of the individual and the team.
